This talk will explore the gut-brain axis, the complex communication network between the gastrointestinal system and the brain, and its influence on human health. Mechanisms by which the gut microbiome, neural pathways, and immune signaling interact to impact brain function and development will be discussed, highlighting how disruptions in this axis can contribute to a range of diseases, from mental health disorders like anxiety and depression to functional GI conditions such as IBS. Attendees will gain an understanding of the emerging role of the gut-brain connection in the pathophysiology and treatment of these disorders.
Session Learning Objectives:
1.) Understand the complex relationship between the gastrointestinal system and the brain.
2.) Explain how disruptions in the axis can contribute to the development of a range of diseases.
3.) Apply this understanding to the evaluation and treatment of various disorders.
